There are many things we want to do in this short life. We start them with all enthusiasm, but soon that enthusiasm fades away. We all have a dream, an aim or a vision. How to stay motivated? Here are 5 simple tips to stay motivated in life. These can be applied to any goal that we have, for example, to start a new hobby, develop different skills, get fit and healthy, start a business, break a bad habit, develop a better personality, etc. When we find motivation, we can do what we desire to do.

Clear the Road

What are the roadblocks that stop us from doing what we want to do? Let me give you my example. I want to stay fit and healthy, but all I do in my free time is get a packet of snacks and drown myself into some sitcom that keeps me occupied until I have some other work. This kind of lifestyle is not going to help me stay fit and healthy. What could my roadblocks be?

Entertainment is at the top of my list that stops me from doing what I want to do. Is entertainment wrong? No! But someone rightly said, ‘too much of anything is good for nothing’. Therefore, I need to cut down the time I spend on entertainment.

So, what are we waiting for? The sooner we realise the roadblocks and clear them, the easier it is for us to stay motivated.

Keep Reminders

Let’s take a sticky note and write what we desire to do and stick that to the side of the TV, head of the bed or arm of the couch. Next time we go there to while away our whole afternoon, we will see that note and be reminded of what we ought to do.

We can also take a picture of our dreams or goals and make it a screen saver on our mobiles, laptops and desk tops. Thus, whenever we switch them on, we are reminded of our goals. I believe the more we are reminded of something, the sooner we try to get it done.

Find a Buddy

This is crucial if we want to keep going. Having a buddy as an accountable partner will keep us on our toes. We need to find someone who desires the best for us, who understands our shortcomings and who is willing to help us achieve our goals. If we already have one, great! If not, it’s time we found a buddy. Being accountable will help us live a transparent life. The more open we are, the easier it is for the other person to motivate and guide us.

A buddy will encourage and motivate us when we feel like giving up and will challenge us when we think ‘that’s enough’. If we want to stay motivated almost every day, we better find a buddy.

Join a Group

It is rightly said, ‘the more, the merrier’. Another way to stay motivated is to surround ourselves with people who have similar goals and visions. When we belong to such groups, it is a double blessing. Because everyone has the same goal, there is always something to give and receive. The experiences of one will encourage, challenge and motivate the others to do better and stay on track.

Recently, I joined a group of women who desire to get fit and healthy. Seeing what they are doing and the measures they are taking, I am motivated to do something too. This is what happens when we join a group that has people who take their goals seriously.

Claim the Reward

The best way to keep ourselves self-motivated is to appreciate and reward our progress no matter how slow it may seem. It is just like how it works in a work set-up. No one feels demotivated when there is appreciation and recognition.

The same goes for us. While we are busy trying to achieve a goal, instead of looking for constant motivation outside, let’s try this. Let’s take the same example (trying to stay fit and healthy). If I see improvement in my health in anyway (reduced weight or better stamina), I can reward myself for making it thus far. On a serious note, let the rewards not be something that we have been trying to stay away from.

So, in my case, I can reward myself a new shirt, a pair of shoes, a facial or haircut, etc. These will not affect my goal of staying healthy in anyway. However, if I choose to reward myself with foods that I missed having or take a break with another sitcom that goes on for weeks, I can assure you that it will be very hard for me to get back on track. Rewards are great, but we need to choose them wisely.

‘You can lead to horse to water, but you can’t make it drink’.

Isn’t this so true? No one can do everything for us. People can encourage, motivate, guide, etc., but in the end, we have to take the step to do what we desire to do.
