At 5:55 am, I heard the alarm ring. I realised that it was raining outside and that I couldn’t go for my walk, so I snoozed it and went back to sleep. I got up at 6:25 am, freshened up and poured myself a cup of coffee. I took my bible, phone and my cup of coffee to the hall and sat next to the window. I had a lovely time reflecting on the day’s passage as I sipped at my coffee. I thanked God for all that he has done for me, my family and my friends. It was a refreshing time.

I was expecting a call around 7:00-7:20 am. To my disappointment, I didn’t receive any call, and it was time for me to get ready for work. Feeling sad, I quickly had a shower and put on my home clothes to have my breakfast and pack my lunch.

After having my breakfast, while walking back to my room, I stepped on water and I slipped and fell hard on my back. I landed in a half-split position. Thankfully, I didn’t get hurt. Landing on a damp floor after having a shower doesn’t feel good, does it? Nevertheless, I quickly got back on my feet, had a wash and hurried to get ready and leave for work.

It was raining the whole time. Fortunately, when I stepped out of the room, the rain stopped and I was able to make it on time for work. After reaching my workplace, I got to know that there was no work for the day. It was going to be a dull and boring day indeed!

First, I didn’t receive the call that I was looking forward to. Second, I slipped and fell down. Third, when I turned up for work, there was no work. All these ended up spoiling my mood. Thanksgiving Day might not be a holiday in India, but at least I should have a good start so that I can have a thankful heart throughout the day, right?

I took out my phone and texted one of my close friends, ‘I don’t feel thankful this thanksgiving Day’. I got this reply ‘Don’t let one bad thing stop you from being thankful for so many other good things’.

Right! We often end up focussing on the bad stuff that we forget the good stuff, don’t we? If this thanksgiving day was not quite good for you, just like it was for me, it doesn’t mean you should give up on giving thanks. If your thanksgiving morning was not great, it’s OK.

Let’s remember that Thanksgiving is not about one day, it about being thankful every single day. When we learn to be thankful for both the small and big things in our lives, the bad and the sad things won’t matter much.

Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving. If not, don’t worry. Putting the turkey aside, we have the chance to give thanks whenever it’s possible.

Every morning is a fresh start. Wake up with a thankful heart. –Kristen Butler
